Aprilaire Register & Grille Cleaning: The Miami Owner’s Guide
Aprilaire register and grille cleaning in Miami typically runs $189 to $340 for a whole-home service that includes every register, grille, and return in the system. We stock Aprilaire-compatible grilles and registers on the truck, so if any are cracked, corroded, or past saving, we can swap them the same visit. Most Miami owners discover a problem when a grille won’t sit flush anymore, or when they pull one off and find the damper blade has snapped, or the finish has started flaking from years of salt air and humidity.

We’ve been cleaning and replacing Aprilaire registers and grilles across Miami since 2004. Roy Castellanos has seen every failure mode this climate can produce, from rusted hinge pins in Brickell condos to paint-bubbled registers in older Coral Gables homes. If you can’t explain the job plainly, you probably shouldn’t be doing it, and that’s how we approach every Aprilaire part we touch.
Which Aprilaire Models This Applies To
Aprilaire doesn’t make one universal register. The brand’s registers and grilles fall into a few specific lines, and most Miami homes we service have one of three types: the standard stamped-steel 800-series, the adjustable curved-blade 500-series, or the high-flow aluminum 670-series return grilles. Aprilaire stamps a model number on the back face of most registers, usually a four-digit code starting with 8 or 5. Flip the grille over and look for it before you call, because the sizing between series is not interchangeable across every era of the product line.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners run into: Aprilaire changed mounting-hole spacing on the 800-series somewhere in the mid-2010s. An older 8×10 grille from a 2009 install will not always line up with the current 8×10 replacement without new screw holes. We measure the opening, not the old grille, and match from there. As for OEM versus aftermarket, we carry both. OEM Aprilaire grilles are stamped and powder-coated with a finish that holds up in South Florida humidity noticeably longer than most aftermarket equivalents. But a good aftermarket grille with a baked enamel finish is often $20 to $40 less per unit and perfectly serviceable in a dry closet or pantry. We’ll show you both and let the price do the talking.

Signs Your Aprilaire Register & Grille Cleaning Is Failing
- Flaking or bubbling finish. Miami’s salt air and year-round humidity attack powder coat faster than you’d expect. Once the coating breaches, the steel underneath starts rusting within months, and the flakes end up in your airstream.
- A damper that won’t hold position. The little metal blade inside an adjustable register has a friction mechanism that wears out. On Aprilaire 500-series units, the plastic tension clip is usually the first thing to go, leaving the damper flopping open or closed regardless of how you set it.
- A grille that rattles when the system runs. Loose mounting screws are the simple fix, but if the screw holes have wallowed out or the frame has warped, tightening won’t help. The register needs replacement, not more torque.
- Visible rust on the face or louvers. In beach-adjacent neighborhoods like Key Biscayne or North Miami Beach, we see rust on registers inside homes that are miles from the ocean. The air here is aggressive, and once rust starts, it spreads through the louver edges fast.
- Grime that won’t come clean. If a register has baked-on dust and hair that survives a soak in degreaser, the finish is gone. It’ll keep collecting grime and the airflow restriction gets worse every year.
Most of these issues are caught during a routine duct cleaning, when we pull every register and get eyes on the back side where the damage hides.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Register and grille cleaning for a typical Miami home, meaning every supply and return opening, runs $189 to $340 depending on how many registers you have and how much buildup we’re dealing with. If any registers need replacing, the parts are priced separately and we write it down before we touch anything.

| Service | Typical Miami Price |
|---|---|
| Whole-home register & grille cleaning (up to 12 openings) | $189 – $280 |
| Whole-home cleaning, larger homes (13-20 openings) | $260 – $340 |
| Aprilaire OEM replacement register (standard sizes) | $35 – $75 per unit |
| Quality aftermarket replacement register | $15 – $40 per unit |
| Return grille cleaning with filter replacement | $45 – $95 per return |
Every quote is one written price per system, agreed before work starts. It doesn’t move at the door. The cleaning itself includes pulling each register, degreasing the frame and louvers, scrubbing the damper mechanism, cleaning the return grilles, and reinstalling with new screws where needed. If a register breaks during removal, which does happen with older plastic damper clips, the replacement is on us. The entire job falls under our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the work isn’t done right, we make it right, written on every order.
DIY or Call Us?
Cleaning a register is not dangerous work. Pull it off, wash it in the sink with a degreaser, dry it, put it back. That’s within reach for any homeowner. But if the damper blade is snapped, the finish is compromised, or the grille won’t sit flush, cleaning won’t fix it, and forcing the damper back into position can send a metal or plastic shard into the ductwork where it’ll rattle around until the next cleaning. Grilles and registers live in the airstream you breathe, so a mismatched or poorly seated replacement means unfiltered air moving through gaps in the opening. We carry the right Aprilaire-compatible parts on the truck, and we’ll match the size, the mounting pattern, and the finish before we leave. If you’d rather not mess with it, call (850) 660-3272 and we’ll take care of it in one visit.
FAQs
In Miami, you’re looking at 8 to 15 years at most. The humidity and salt air cut the lifespan of the finish dramatically, especially in waterfront homes. If yours are older than 2010 and showing flaking or rust, replacement is the right call.
A snapped damper clip can sometimes be replaced if we have the matching part, but a rusted or flaking finish cannot be refinished in a way that lasts. We’ll tell you if a repair is practical before we ever suggest a replacement, and the price is always written before the work.
A whole-home cleaning with 8 to 15 registers takes about two hours. If we’re replacing multiple grilles, it runs closer to three. We’ll give you a window and hit it, because showing up late isn’t part of the standard here.
Yes. We carry common Aprilaire 800-series and 500-series sizes along with quality aftermarket equivalents, so most replacements happen the same visit. For an exact quote on your home, call (850) 660-3272.
